Since the Marseille weekend, which was very rich in meetings and exchanges, some groups have taken the slogan “Stop Cruises Everywhere” literally. And to show that this problem must find answers on a European scale, we have carried out a series of joint actions this summer!
June 1st: World Anti-cruises Day
June 1st was the officialization of the World Anti-cruises Day which will take place every year on the first Saturday of June.
On that day, visual actions and demonstrations took place in 13 port cities in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and France under the same slogan “Cruises not here not anywhere!”
Cruise poursuit of Azamara Quest
In the process, a “cruise pursuit” was launched against the Azamara Quest ship, which was offering a 35-day cruise in Europe. The passengers of this luxury cruise must have received the message “stop sinking the climate” which was addressed to them in all tones (in sailboats and canoes, with fanfare, on a red carpet) in 7 of the French ports where they docked: Marseille, Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Nantes, Brest, Saint-Malo and Cherbourg. Franco-German blockades of July 6
On July 6, activists took to the oars: blockades took place simultaneously in France and Germany. That day, the Seven Seas Voyager turned around in front of the activists and abandoned its stopover in Concarneau, and two cruise ships were blocked in the Bay of Kiel.
August 18: Lock blockage in Amsterdam
On August 18, a lock blockage interrupted the passage of a 293.2-meter-long, 39.8-meter-wide cruise ship sailing under the Bahamian flag, the Serenade of the Seas, which was bound for Amsterdam. Actions continued at the city gates for several weeks, so much so that the “Sidney Dream” abandoned its stopover in the capital on September 6.
September 21: Blocking of 3 cruise ships in Marseille
On September 21, Stop Croisières and Extinction Rebellion Marseille blocked the entry of 3 cruise ships to the port. More information in our dedicated article.
